Not another place
to chat with one agent.
Cerebro is for running a coordinated Claude and Codex fleet on your Mac. That makes it different from a terminal layout, a consumer chat app, or a framework you assemble yourself.
The question is what happens after the prompt.
Cerebro keeps the mission, agents, state, handoffs, and recorded results together. The alternatives can be excellent when you need a narrower surface.
| Capability | Terminal panes | Desktop chat | Cerebro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coordinated multi-agent mission | Manual | Usually one thread | One Conductor and named agents |
| Durable agent working state | You reconstruct it | Conversation-centric | Decisions, next step, questions, files |
| Live operations view | Pane status | Chat history | Mission Canvas and run state |
| Claude and Codex roles | Open both yourself | Vendor-specific | Provider choice per mission role |
| Pause, stop, or redirect the fleet | Process by process | Thread by thread | Mission-level command |
| Recorded actions and outcomes | Build your own log | Chat transcript | Receipts, Audit, and run history |
| Local ownership of operating state | Files are yours | Service-owned | Native app state on your Mac |
| Fast casual chat | More setup | Best fit | A heavier operating surface |
Keep the terminals. Add the operation.
tmux, Warp, and ordinary terminal windows remain the most flexible way to drive individual provider CLIs. Cerebro adds coordination and state across those agent processes.
- Cerebro advantage: one mission, named roles, durable handoffs, visible blockers, and receipts.
- Terminal advantage: immediate shell freedom, remote SSH work, and no new interface to learn.
- Practical answer: use the terminal for direct work and Cerebro when the fleet itself becomes the problem.
Several agents, one outcome
When forgotten tabs, repeated briefings, and invisible handoffs cost more than the app layer.
Execution instead of another conversation.
ChatGPT and Claude desktop apps are easier for a quick answer, broad consumer access, and mobile use. Cerebro is built for a coordinated operation over the provider CLIs and workspaces you already own.
- Cerebro advantage: multiple agents, real project state, autonomous workflows, and live Mission command.
- Chat advantage: lower setup, polished mobile access, and excellent one-off conversation.
- Different job: one helps you talk to a model; the other helps you run a fleet.
Autonomy starts when you choose it
Under the selected autonomous top-level boundary, the Conductor and agents have full operational control only inside the workspace and connected services you chose.
A product surface instead of a platform project.
Open-source agent frameworks offer maximum composability and are the right choice when the orchestration itself is your codebase. Cerebro packages an opinionated native operating experience.
- Cerebro advantage: Mission, Conductor, memory, provider handoff, workers, and Audit arrive together.
- Framework advantage: arbitrary runtime architecture, server deployment, custom models, and deep code-level extension.
- Honest tradeoff: Cerebro optimizes for Mac operators, not every possible agent topology.
No bundled model plan
You install and authenticate Claude Code or Codex. Provider cost and availability remain on those accounts.
